Tackling Youth Unemployment in Warley Ward

February 14, 2012 in Calderdale, Lib Dems, Warley

Janet Battye our Liberal Democrat leader on Calderdale Council has been doing some fantastic work trying to tackle the problem of youth unemployment. Recently she held an urgent summit meeting that brought people to together to work on a solution for this problem here in Calderdale.

Believe it or not Warley ward has some of the highest levels of youth unemployment in Calderdale. We need to work harder in the ward to improve the chances and opportunities for these people. Essential to this is securing better educational opportunities for young people. Here in Warley ward I believe that means securing a six-form colleague for Halifax High School.

I run a business myself and I am keen to work with other local businesses to help tackle this problem. I belive there is far more scope to provide increased apprenticeships  for young people, and I am committed to making this happen. We also need to ensure far more young people have their aspirations lifted and this will require creating a spirit of entrepreneurship. Only through innovation, and business growth will we be able to get our economy back on track.

North Kirklees? No Thanks!

February 12, 2012 in Calderdale, Lib Dems

The Courier has informed us of the local Conservatives plan to rename us North Kirklees. The change of name is suggested as part of their plan to merge our Council with Kirklees Council that runs Huddersfield. The argument is that by sharing services efficiencies will be found.

The plan seems oblivious to the fact that Calderdale Council already works with other Councils to share services.  Not just Kirklees, but Bradford too. A recent example is the work being done with Bradford Council to create new facilities which will treat waste, improve Calderdale’s recycling rate, recover energy and substantially reduce the council’s use of landfill.

The plan goes against the entire localism agenda, that local services are best provided by people who know their community.  The last thing we need is a Council over in Huddersfield running things for us. People in Halifax and the wider Calderdale area are proud of where they live, and I suspect they won’t want to be re-branded as North Kirklees.

Commander’s House at Halifax High

January 30, 2012 in Community Action

Local Lib Dem councillors are working with the Steering Committee at Halifax High School to try to obtain funding for a new Community Building at the Commander’s House on the school site. This building would be available to all local people for a variety of purposes, including skills and vocational training.

Lib Dem Cllr Ashley Evans is a Governor at the school and says “If the committee is successful in pulling this off, the facility will be of immense benefit, and Keith and I are right behind it”. Keith Hutson is a member of the Steering Committee.

Ashville Croft Parking Problems

January 26, 2012 in Parking Issues

In November, residents of Ashville Croft told us about the problems they were suffering due to cars parking too near to the junction with Sandbeds Road. We immediately set to work and the council have agreed to paint white lines at the junction, to discourage inconsiderate parking.

Keith says, “Despite scarce economic resources, I have persuaded the council to take action due to the real difficulties being experienced by residents”.
